WHO?
I’m a book obsessed academic who has always been interested in the surfaces of things, and in getting under them. I like people for the most part, and find them interesting. Fashion and style have always impressed me as more than superficial.

What?
Many years ago I started wondering what drew me to my friends and partners, and about the insider rules of dressing within ‘outsider’ subcultures.
I’m from Toronto, and since I was a teenager I was obsessed with a column in our weekly free newspaper (NOW magazine)—the now defunct “What I Wear” weekly interview. It would feature one person each week, and run down their entire outfit from shoes to accessories, with sourcing and relevant quirky backstories. It must have lodged into my brain at a sensitive time because I’ve always been interested in how people style themselves, and why. Even now, I couldn’t easily answer the questions I ask people on my show. I know what I like, and I know what I gravitate towards, but really, everything is fair game in terms of style. I like what I like. When friends identify something as “so Sarah”, I want to stop them and ask what about an item speaks to them of me. But I don’t. Fashion helps me read people–complex, sensitive, funny and awesome people. And that’s why I like it. |
when?
Episodes 1 through 35 were published between February 2014 and July 2016.
WHY?
“Fashion is about fun, about being embodied, in the moment….and engaging with people in a non-verbal way, but also this way of deeply engaging with who I am and where I am in that moment” –Virgie Tovar DCC 19
“In the end, I think having dress codes is useful– we need them. We need to be able to identify who shares our interests, and who feels authentic. “—Lorraine Hewitt DCC 11
